Driving in Ontario: Step-by-Step Licence Process for New Drivers
To get your driver's licence in Ontario, you need to be at least 16 years old and follow the province’s Graduated Licensing System, which helps new drivers gain experience and skills over time. This system includes three levels: G1, G2, and Full G Licence (G).

Step 1: G1 Licence – Your Beginner’s Permit
Start by preparing for the written knowledge test. You can study using the Ontario Driver’s Handbook, available online, in stores, or at DriveTest Centres.
Once you turn 16, head to your local DriveTest Centre to take the G1 written test. You’ll need:
-
Two pieces of valid government-issued ID
-
A fee of approximately $159.75 (covers the knowledge test, vision test, and includes the cost of your G1 and G2 road tests)

Helpful Tip: You can use the practice and mock tests available on the ZeroPoint Driving Academy website to prepare effectively and boost your chances of passing the G1 written test on your first try—before heading to the DriveTest Centre.

If you pass, you’ll receive your G1 licence, which comes with a set of restrictions designed for new drivers.

G1 Driving Restrictions:
-
You must drive with a fully licensed driver (G class) who has at least 4 years of experience and a blood alcohol level below 0.05%.
-
No driving between midnight and 5:00 a.m.
-
You’re not allowed on 400-series highways or high-speed expressways unless accompanied by a licensed driving instructor.
-
Your blood alcohol level must be zero (0.00%).
-
Everyone in the vehicle must wear a seatbelt, and the number of passengers must not exceed the number of working seatbelts.

Bonus Tip: Completing a Ministry-approved beginner driver education (BDE) course allows you to take your first road test after 8 months, instead of waiting the full 12 months.

Step 2: G2 Licence – Intermediate Level
After 8 to 12 months of safe driving with your G1 (depending on whether you completed an approved driver education course), you can book the G1 Exit Test (also called the Level 1 Road Test). This test assesses basic driving skills like turning, stopping, and obeying road signs.
If you pass, you'll receive your G2 licence.
G2 Driving Restrictions:
-
Your blood alcohol level must remain at 0.00% at all times.
-
Everyone in the vehicle must be properly buckled up, and the number of passengers cannot exceed the number of seatbelts.
-
For drivers under 19 years old, additional nighttime passenger restrictions may apply during the first six months.

Step 3: Full G Licence – Become a Fully Licensed Driver
After holding your G2 licence for 12 months, you can take the G2 Exit Test (also called the Level 2 Road Test), which includes highway driving and advanced skills.
Passing this test earns you a full G licence, with no additional restrictions, giving you full driving privileges in Ontario

About
After years of working as a driving instructor and with various driving schools, I noticed a major issue—many schools and agencies act as middlemen, charging high fees to cover office costs and profits. That’s why I created ZeroPoint, a home-based driving school (registered with the province and city) offering an online BDE course and expert training without unnecessary costs.
By cutting out the middleman, we provide lower fees, flexible options, and direct access to top instructors. At ZeroPoint, you get high-quality driving lessons at the best value—because learning to drive shouldn’t break the bank!
